Youth Media Communication Development Program Launches in Columbus

The inaugural class of the Youth Media and Communication Development program of the New American Community Information Center, NACIC designed to empower K-12 students with foundational journalism skills and writing was held Monday, March 30, 2026, at the ETSS Social Services after-school program site at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. 530 McNaughten Rd, Columbus, Ohio, United States.

With about 30 students participating in the combined inaugural class of first grade to 12th grade students, the students learned the basic skills of journalism, writing, media platforms and ethics of journalism.

“We are truly grateful that our students have been given this opportunity, and we hope it will make a meaningful difference. We look forward to working with you throughout the remaining four classes,” said Abebaye Tesfaye Shigut, Youth Program Manager.

“They students had fun learning about journalism,” said Mr. Drew, the site coordinator.

“It went very well with the students eager to learn about journalism, writing and speaking. We are grateful to all the staff at site for the support as we look forward to four more classes,” said Deba Uwadiae, NACIC Executive Director, who took the students in basics of Journalism while Taiwo Akinlami taught the students Ethics of Journalism.

Youth Media and Communication Development is a partnership program between the City of Columbus Department of Neighborhood and the New American Community Information Center and New Americans Press to equip students with real-world skills in writing, reporting, ethics, and media literacy. It will empower K–12 students with foundational journalism skills, critical thinking, and ethical awareness, preparing them to become responsible and impactful writers, journalists and storytellers in the future.
